Why A Maltese?
As I said on page one, I discovered the Maltese while searching the Internet looking through the dog web sites. I was in the process of building my first site, all about my little Kola, an adorable little Yorkie/Pom. I had no idea at all how to go about it, so I surfed for hours looking for ideas. I found so many beautiful sites, cute sites, silly sites, you name it, I found it. I worked on her site as I surfed, adding a little bit of  everything. I discovered these little angels, the Maltese, while looking for ideas.
Kola's site is under reconstruction and will be linked to Natalie's as soon as I get it together.

I got my little Kola while my first doxie, Riley was ill. I really enjoyed having 2 dogs, their personalities were so different, just like children. Riley was my loving, dependent little guy and Kola is my little INdependent one, she's nobody's dog. She needs her space and spends her time with which ever family member she chooses at any given time.
After we lost Riley, the house was too quiet with just one dog, so I decided I would get another doxie. We loved Riley so much and I thought Kola was acting lonely and depressed. It was during this time that I began building her web site and surfing the net for ideas.
I discovered the Maltese........
In no time at all, I found myself going to every search engine I could find and typing in the word "Maltese". The more I learned, the more I liked. I read the news paper classifieds every day. I was so totally sold, I knew this beautiful little ball of white fur was the perfect dog for me. Two of my sons were grown and moved out of the house, and the 3rd was a teenager. After reading the classified Ads for a few months, I thought it was time to buy my new little one, I wanted a small female. The search continued with no luck finding a small female near my area. I finally got impatient and called a number advertising 4 little males. I  talked to one of the most irresponsible pet owners I've even spoken to in my life. This lady had bred her Maltese so that her 4 year old child could watch the mother give birth. I questioned her about the pups and she couldn't tell me a single thing about them. She said the parents were small and that was about it. I can only say I hope those 4 little males found good, loving homes. I finally found a breeder I felt comfortable with and was put on a waiting list. Three months later, on June 22, 2000, little Natalie was born! I was at the top of the list for a small female. I got 1st choice...
         * I wrote what I learned about the Maltese personality and their  needs in a
separate paragraph at the bottom of this page...
Maltese are beautiful little dogs who are very loyal to they're families, especially the main care taker. They are very friendly and loving, happiest when they are in the company of their mommy. My little Natalie truly is a little angel, she is constantly at my side or on my lap. She follows me from room to room, up and down the stairs and loves to go bye-bye with me. She is highly intelligent, but yet naive in her own way. Like having a small child around. She is 6 months old as I am writing this and is still under 4 lb. When she hears a noise and the other two dogs bark, she runs like a flash and is on my lap before I know what happened. She is the same way if Kola should growl at Winston, or visa versa, she flies across the room and onto my lap to watch from her safety zone. She also has a fearless side to her, she is not afraid to do anything Winston does. He is the mini-doxie and she occasionally thinks she is one also. If he can do it, she thinks she can too. She was able to go up and down the stairs way before her time, she would slowly slide herself down each step, and then take her little claws and literally climb back up each step to get back up with us. She loves all dogs and all people and she assumes they love her, too. So far, she hasn't run into any who would cause her harm, if she ever does, she will be in for the surprise of her life.
The wait for my little girl.....
I was on the phone or e-mailing this lady every other day. I wanted all of the information I could possibly get about the progress of my little one. I knew she was getting a little tired of me, but I had searched for so long, then waited so long, I just wanted to get my little one home. The breeder had a couple of daughters, 10 and 12 years old who loved the babies and played with them often. I sent the girls some money to give my little one extra time and attention so that she would be well socialized and spoiled when I got her. I realize this is not ethical for a breeder, but as I told her, this was a deal between myself and her daughters. It had nothing to do with her. I was kept informed of her progress, and I know the girls did a great job of helping the pup get in her socializing and play time, she was completely comfortable with me the day I brought her home. She had no insecurities around humans and she didn't cry at all her first night home. She just made herself right at home and was a good eater from the start. I gave her Nutri Cal for a few months because she was so small, I didn't want to have to worry about hypoglycemia.

** Maltese are not for everyone. They are very loving, emotional little dogs who require lots of attention. They want to be with their owner most of the time, usually on your lap or beside you. Maltese are not for small children unless they can be closely supervised when they are together. The delicate bone structure and gentle nature of the Mlatese makes them a prime target for getting hurt by small children. A larger Maltese would do well in a family with smaller children.
They are highly intelligent little one's, easy to train and live to please their owners. They tend to get their feelings hurt very easily. They were originally bred to be a lap dog. Women of prestige carried them in the poofy sleeves of their dresses.
These little angel's are perfect for people who want a precious little lap dog and the constant companionship they have to offer. The Maltese loves to travel with you and is always ready to go bye-bye.
The Maltese are very devoted to their human companions and crave constant attention.
The Maltese does require daily brushing and face cleaning, they have beautiful long hair and are a perfect choice for people with allergies since they shed very little. These little darlings are truly incredible little angels and they are sure to bring a smile to your face each and every day. When you need a hug, you can bet your little Maltese will be more than happy to oblige you.
The love you give your Maltese will be returned ten fold!
